Knotty Barrel

Downtown San Diego East Village…

…has a new neighborhood restaurant and bar that just opened up and it’s already becoming a big hit with the local East Village crew.  East Village  is a big supporter of the non-chain type restaurants and pubs and the Knotty Barrel has something unique going for them.

The Knotty Barrel is a hybrid of a traditional British Pub and a more modern gastro pub restaurant.  We are seeing a fair number of taverns like this pop up in Southern California along with the restaurant brewery revolution.

The beer list at the Knotty Barrel is extensive and local brews from Mission Brewery, Stone Brewery and Port Brewing as well as favorites like Chimay,  Alesmith, Lost Abbey, Ballast Point and more.  Trust me, the beer connoisseur won’t be disappointed with the selection of drafts or bottles.

Knotty Barrel specialty drinksinclude some really inspiring choices like the Classic Sidecar which includes Bulleit Bourbon, Grand Marnier & lemon juice.   Too wimpy, try something more bold like the Dark  & Stormy with Pyrat XO reserve  Rum & Ginger Beer.

Knotty Barrel East Village Food

I was surprised to discover that the Knotty Barrel uses all local meats and vegetables in their food preparation.  They focus on the details and even make their own mayonnaise, Dijon mustard and ketchup.  Our waitress recommended the Mac & Cheese, but my wife was pregnant and wanted a salad so she opted for the Cape C0d Chopped Salad.  It was really good and the local Duroc smoked bacon pieces were delicious.

I opted for the Knotty Burger and it was definitley better than your average burger.  If you are looking for a leaner cut, they have the Bison Burger or even the Salmon Burger.  Other Mains include:

  • Half Chicken
  • Polenta & Vegetables
  • Seared NY Strip
  • Scallops & Risotto
  • and more…

I really like over all feel of the places rich dark finishes, high pub tables, few TV’s and windows that all open up to the wonderful San Diego weather.  The service was great for dinner and the bartender was really warm & friendly…you can be sure to find me at the Knotty Barrel again….
