Bankers Hill is an uptown San Diego neighborhood bordered by Mission Hills and Hillcrest to the north, by Downtown to the south and Balboa Park to the east. It sits perched on the hillside over the San Diego bay and airport.  It was named “Bankers Hill” because of its reputation for being home to the affluent. Many of the homes, designed by the likes of Irving Gill and other notable architects, date back to the late 1800s and some have been restored into bed-and-breakfast inns and office suites occupied by accountants and attorneys.

Many of the homes have views of the ocean or Balboa Park and the walk-ability to restaurants, cafes, bars and the world famous Balboa park make it one of the best urban neighborhoods in San Diego. 5th Avenue is the primary business section, many of which are medical and dental offices, which have led to the area being dubbed “Pill Hill.”  In 2014 Sharp Reese Steely constructed a beautiful new medical facility with urgent care, general practitioners and even doctors specializing in many areas of medicine.

Balboa Park Condos

The area is home to existing condominiums and courtyard apartments, as well as new condos being constructed all over the area.  Buildings like Mi Arbolito, Vue on 5th, and blank are among the newest projects the area.  There are a mix of older low rise condo buildings as well as luxury high rise condos like Park Laurel.  The neighborhood has a good blend of modern meets historical so it feels like a dynamic place with good energy.

Banker’s Hill is where modern meets historical

Popular restaurants include the Hob Nob Café, Bertrand at Mr. A’s, Busalacci’s, Croces Park West and Cucina Urbana.  Bankers Hill finds itself in the flight path and airplane watching is a common pastime.  2015 marks the 100 year anniversary for Balboa Park so there have been many public projects improving the area.
